Islands of Resilience: Showcase Struma+Iodine feat. Mabe Fratti, DJ Maria., Geier Aus Stahl, Alpha Tracks, Nino Stelzl, Inou Ki Endo

Mabe Fratti is a Guatemalan cellist and composer. Her latest release Se Ve Desde Aquí (It Is Seen From Here) marks another step in a remarkable run of releases. It is possibly her most revealing one to date; showcasing a sinuous and tensile sound coupled with a confident and clear-eyed worldview. Mabe Fratti is always on the lookout for new ways to express herself and to reflect her surroundings; she sees this as a process of continual “sonic transformation”. Not that she sees her method as unique: “I believe this happens to a lot of musicians, that in the interim when you finish a record and you release it you learn [new] things and change your philosophy towards what you want to sound like.” Se Ve Desde Aquí is a decisive shift away from Fratti’s most recent works, which were more enigmatic in tone.

Geier aus Stahl is one of the many artistic guises of Leonard Prochazka. He is a commissioner to investigate more detailed on questions of autonomy and destructive power relations. With the frequencies of both electronic and acoustic instruments Geier is weaving a flying carpet that he invites you on to have a discussion about the bridges between selective and collective consciousness.

The DJ, producer and visual artist is a Viennese scene stalwart and a walking encyclopaedia of pop culture. In his DJ sets, which are usually strictly vinyl-based, he nevertheless likes to peek into the most obscure niches of the underground.

The music of Alpha Tracks is mainly produced live on analog machines, often with different guest musicians, focussing less on technical fetishism than on live dynamics of studio collaborations. The result is a sound that refers to the rave era of the early nineties. Alpha Tracks blithely ignores tempo limits or taste doctrines. Aesthetic taboos or even fragments of often maligned genres, are not picked up as a retro fetish but are folded into the contemporary oeuvre with playful Viennese charm.

Inou Ki Endo’s preference lies in infernal and cerebral sounds, obscure dilettantes and professional borderliners beyond the musical mainstream. Shilla Strelka hosts concerts in Vienna under the name Struma+Iodine, curates the Unsafe+Sounds Festival, is part of the Elevate Festival team of curators and active as a music journalist for various magazines. As Inou Ki Endo, she is filtering communal sounds and rhythms from the past and the present, drawing from techno, industrial, ambient and noise.
