Ryu Hankil
Ryu Hankil. Born in Seoul in 1975. computer musician, improviser and writer. Since beginning his career as an electronic musician in 2005, he has explored the potential for producing different music through non-musical objects. Focusing on how the inherent vibrations of objects create various forms of ‘fiction’ within a musical context through sonic thinking, he has recently expanded his interest to the creation of Sonic Fiction through digital synthesis. As a musician, he has released over 30 albums, including solo albums and collaborative albums with musicians both domestically and internationally.
Since 2009, he has also been a member of ‘FEN (Far East Network)’, an Asian music network project alongside Otomo Yoshihide, Yan Jun, and Yuen Chee Wai. Recently, he presented works combining text and synthetic sounds〈③〉 (2022) and 〈⑧ Rhythm Machine〉 (2025), in conjunction with exhibitions.
As an organizer, he curated the electro acoustic improvised music concert series 《RELAY》 (2005-2008) and the international sound art workshop 《Mullae Resonance》 (2011-2014). He also curated and directed the experimental video/sound festival 《Anechoic》(2014) and the contemporary electronic music festival 《Continuous Verbs》 (2016) at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA).
He has also participated as an artist in numerous exhibitions both domestically and internationally, including the Media City Biennale Seoul, the Nam June Paik Art Center, the Incheon Art Platform, as well as exhibitions in the UK, Canada, and China. His major publications include Prince of Darkness: On the Production and Amplification of Fiction (2018) and System and Art: Advanced Science Institute Interdisciplinary Research Series 6 (2017, co-authored). A text published under the name ‘SISU (Systematic Irregularity Study Unit)’ in K-OS (2020, co-authored) was featured in the DOCUMENTS section of the UK publisher Urbanomic. –
